Journal History

Early Theatre: A Journal associated with the Records of Early English Drama (founded 1998) evolved out of a newsletter at the Records of Early English Drama (REED) called the REED Newsletter, a biannual that began in 1976. The change in 1998 reflected the growing stature of the earlier publication and the need for a scholarly journal in this field which would have a longer and more independent life than a newsletter attached to REED.

Early Theatre began as an annual, with 6-8 peer-reviewed articles per year. Soon thereafter, we moved to bi-annual publication, with one issue in June and one in December, and we now publish on average 20 peer-reviewed articles and notes each year.

In 2011, we developed a green open access policy, with content published for two years or more made freely available on our website. We actively encourage authors to freely and immediately post their articles and link to them through social media. We are also registered with CrossRef and work with them to assign and register DOIs, thus facilitating greater linking to journal content.

REED Newsletter

The REED Newsletter was published by the Records of Early English Drama Project (REED), University of Toronto, in association with McMaster University between 1976 and 1997. Issued biannually, it published documentary evidence of early drama, items on records research, and requests by scholars for information. Calls for papers, conferences, and notices of recent publications were regularly listed.
